We have been caring for animals alongside their people since 1972.
The comprehensive services we offer include, vaccinations, general medicine, digital radiology, dental radiology, dermatology, dentistry, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, ophthalmology, laboratory, electronic health records, boarding, and on site pet medications. We see cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, pocket pets, select primates, and other exotic species.
Dr. Aman Sukhija, Medical Director
Dr. Sukhija is the owner and Medical Director of Atlantic Animal Hospitals. He purchased the Ormond Beach office in July 2005 and opened the Port Orange location in February 2010. Dr. Sukhija did his undergraduate studies at Indiana University and graduated in 1997. He attended Ross University and Purdue University Schools of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 2001. Dr. Sukhija has been involved with many organizations including AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) and the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) since 1998. He served as Secretary/Treasurer on the AAHA Board of Directors from 2012 to 2014. Dr. Sukhija has been a member of the FVMA (Florida Veterinary Medical Association) since 2005, and the VFVMA (Volusia Flagler Veterinary Medical Association) since 2006, of which he is a Past President. He has also been on the Board of the CATalyst Council, a national organization charged with improving the care cats receive, and was also a Trustee for the AAHA Foundation.
Dr. Maggie Carlson, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Carlson was born in Ohio but grew up on a hobby farm in North Dakota. She got her first veterinary job at age 16 after years of pet sitting and taking care of her own animals. She acheived her Bachelors of Science in Microbiology at NDSU – Go Bison! She was then accepted at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and completed her clinical year at Iowa State University. Dr. Carlson has a special interest in dentistry and exotics. When she’s not busy taking care of patients, she enjoys reading,?horseback riding, and spending time with her home zoo, which includes horses, dogs, cats, birds, and fish.
Melissa Murphy, Practice Manager
Melissa is originally from Corning, New York and moved to Florida in the summer of 2008 after earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Science and Management. While she was in college, Melissa helped to manage a large riding facility housing more than 40 horses. She also took major leadership roles in various on-campus horse-related clubs, including becoming captain of the vaulting team and vice president of the Equine Performance Organization. She eventually plans on attending the University of Florida to earn a Master’s degree in Equine Reproduction. Until that time comes, she is happy to have found her niche at Atlantic Animal Hospitals where she is a jack of all trades, absorbing everything she can of the veterinary field. Melissa’s furry children include brother and sister domestic shorthair cats, Bilbo and Midget, and Maine Coon cat Maximus. In her free time, Melissa enjoys reading, photography, horseback riding, and visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Chelsea Ortner, Office Manager
Chelsea has been working with the Atlantic Animal Hospital team since 2012. She has always had a love and affinity for animals and has been working with veterinarians for almost 15 years. She grew up in Connecticut, where she studied Veterinary Technology. She moved to Florida after graduating high school, and spent several years working with the Florida Keys SPCA and at veterinary offices in the Lower Keys. After her son was born in 2011, she decided to move to the Ormond Beach area to be in a better place to raise him. Chelsea plans to further her education and become a Veterinarian in the near future. She currently shares her life with her young son, Jake, her 9 year old Greyhound/Pitbull mix, Rani, her 2 Maine Coon cats, Obsidian and Zeus, and her favorite bundle of furr, Purresphone (don’t tell the other cats that Chelsea chose a favorite!)
Shawna Valley, Shift Leader & Certified Veterinary Assistant
Shawna joined our team in December 2011 as a Certified Veterinary Assistant. She was born in Maine and moved to Florida in 2009 because of its great weather and natural beauty. She has attended Animal Behavior College and achieved veterinary assistant certification in 2011. She loves to work with animals and has a special interest in surgery and internal medicine. Shawna became the lead surgery technician at Atlantic Animal Hospital’s Ormond Beach office in 2014, and added the role of Supervisor later that year. Shawna lives in Daytona Beach with her two Yorkshire terriers, Rocko and Lilly. The pups were born in October of 2009, brother and sister from the same litter. They all enjoy taking long walks together to new places, running on the beach before they get kicked off by beach patrol, and playing with squeaky-toys!
Breanna Bates, Client Advocate
Breanna is originally from Dothan, AL but raised in Broward County, FL. She has always had a love for furry friends of all types. In high school, she started taking veterinary assistant classes and has been in the veterinary field for several years. In addition to working at our Ormond Beach office, Breanna is also a busy mother of 4 children and 2 pets, a beagle mix named Amelia and a cat named Bagheera. As you can imagine, she has her hands quite full! She hopes to make many advances with her position here and eventually go back to school to expand her veterinary career.
Jennifer Gonzalez, Veterinary Assistant
Jennifer grew up in Jacksonville, but has been in the Ormond Beach area for over 20 years. She has raised two outstanding teenagers and they have always grown up with animals in the house. Everything from turtles to cats! Jennifer has an associate degree in nursing from Daytona State College. Before she came to us, Jennifer worked as an RN in Intensive Care and her medical knowledge has translated wonderfully to be able to help care for our companion animals!
Sarah King, Veterinary Assistant & Team Mentor
Sarah King was born in Pontiac, Michigan. Her family moved down to Ormond Beach when she was only a toddler. She attended St. Brendan’s Catholic school for 10 years and graduated from Seabreeze High School. After graduation she attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, where she lived for 6 more years. Sarah spent half a year prior to graduation in Namibia, Africa, where she worked with cheetahs as a pre-vet intern. She helped with medical procedures on the conservation as well as, rehabilitation and re-releasing cheetahs back into the wild. Working with big cats has always been her passion. In May 2015, she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and a chemistry minor. She fulfilled all of her pre-vet requirements in hopes to attend vet school at Michigan State in a few years. For now, she is working on becoming a certified vet tech and paying off some of her student loans. She enjoys being outdoors, preferably the beach, where she can take her two lovable dogs, Berkley, a 6-year-old Chocolate Lab, and Bear, an 8-month old lab mix. She also has a 2-year-old Maine Coon named Easton.
