ALLERGY TESTING AND SHOTS
Atlantic Animal Hospital works with several laboratories to test and treat our patients with allergies. Skin problems are among the most common complaints in our area. There are four major types of allergies: environmental, flea, contact, and food. Among these, atopic or environmental allergies are the most common cause. Common environmental allergens include pollen, mold, grass, and trees. Allergies in general can lead to severe itching, hair loss, skin infections, ear infections, runny eyes and nose, coughing, and sometimes even vomiting and diarrhea.
We offer serum allergy testing for the most common allergens in our region. Allergy shots are formulated specifically for each patient depending on what he or she is allergic to. According to dermatologists, allergy testing and shots are the optimal way to treat this problem. Unfortunately, these shots may take several months to work and may not be indicated for all patients. Therefore, we offer alternatives that may include oral medications, dietary trials, and insect control.
Steroid injections are commonly used for allergy-related itching. These are not "allergy
shots". Although these may provide a quick fix, chronic steroid use can
lead to several short- and long-term side effects. Every patient is different
and unfortunately there is not quick answer to allergies. The doctors and staff
at Atlantic Animal hospital have several different treatment options available
depending on the patient and cause of the allergies.
